Calcium carbide

Calcium carbide-IC has the nominal formula of CaC2 and the molecular weight of 64.0992 g/mol. The pure material is colorless, but most samples have a color ranging from black to grayish-white, depending on the grade.

CALCIUM CARBIDE Applications:

  • It is used in the production of calcium hydroxide and acetylene.
  • It is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride as acetylene the derivative of calcium carbide can be used as a raw material for the production of PVC.
  • It is used to produce calcium cyanamide.
  • It is used in the removal of sulphur from iron. The removal of sulphur from any material is called desulphurization.
  • Used as a ripening agent like ethylene.
  • It is used as a deoxidizer i.e it helps in the removal of oxygen during the manufacturing of steel.

CALCIUM CARBIDE Characteristics:

Its density is 2.22 g/cc and it melts at 2160 °C with a boiling point of 2300 °C.
